The Greene County supervisors tabled until March a proposal to increase the term life insurance benefit now offered to employees.
Terry Lang, agent for the county’s employee insurance, asked the supervisors to consider increasing the benefit to $10,000 paid at the death of an employee’s spouse or child. The policy now pays $5,000 at the death of a spouse and $2,500 at the death of a child.
The county term life policy has $25,000 in coverage for the employee.
The county pays $1.60 per month per employee for the current coverage. Employees can pay additional to increase their coverage.
The additional coverage Lang suggested would cost $4.50 per month, for an additional cost of $205.90 to the county per month.
Supervisor Tom Contner liked the idea. “We have good employees. I don’t see any problem with this,” he said.
Supervisor Dawn Rudolph said she liked the idea, but thinks it should be at the employee’s expense, not the county’s.
The insurance policy renews every March. The supervisors thanked Lang for the information and said they would discuss it again before the renewal date.
In other business, the supervisors approved a preconstruction agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation for paving the intersections of Highway 144 and unpaved roads between Grand Junction and Rippey (240th St, 250th St, 260th St, 275th St and 280th St).
The paving will extend 50 feet from either side of Highway 144. The county’s share of the cost will be $107,000. County engineer Wade Weiss plans for it to be paid over three years by Local Option Sales and Service Tax (LOSST) funds. He explained that the winter road salt applied to Highway 144 deteriorates the gravel surfaces at the intersections.
The supervisors approved vacating a portion of Kendrick Ave in Jackson Township. The road is a Class B road, not maintained by the county. A public hearing was held prior to passing the resolution to vacate. No one spoke at the hearing or submitted comments.
